The 1/5 Vietnam Veterans Support
Operation GREEN DRAGON
By Nicholas Warr

The 1/5 Vietnam Veterans Unit Chapter of the 1st Marine Division Association will attend the FMDA's Nashville Reunion in “full force.” From all indications, we expect our reunion turn-out to be the largest in recent years, and by count from the “Units Board” our Chapter has accounted for the largest group of reunion attendees each year for the past five years (since our inception in 2003).

As always, the 1/5 Vietnam Veterans have planned some special events, but this year our plans have expanded significantly, and our focus is on raising money for Operation GREEN DRAGON (for more details about this program, see the related article in this issue of The Old Breed News). We wish to cordially invite all FMDA Reunion Attendees (from all eras and all units) to join us in our Hospitality Suite (location TBA) and to participate in our special events:

Wednesday, 27 August 2008, starting at 1:00 pm: 1/5 Vietnam Veterans Fund-Raising Golf Tournament.

Location: Kenny Perry's Country Creek Golf Course, Franklin , Kentucky .

Golf Tournament Prizes

This golf tournament is a “foursome scramble” format, with spots for up to 144 golfers from the area surrounding Nashville and FMDA Reunion Attendees. The golf course is located about a 35-minute drive from the Reunion Hotel.

The cost to participate in this golf tournament is $ 60.00 per player, including a riding cart and green fees. In addition to the golf, each participant will compete for prizes based on their team's score, as well as “longest drive” and “closest to the hole” competitions. Corporate sponsors will donate prizes for door prize drawings and will “host holes.” Also, each golfer will be served a nice dinner after play is complete. After costs, our goal is to raise $5,000.00 or more. For more details and to volunteer to help out on the golf tournament, please contact 1/5 Vietnam Veteran Sgt. Hillous York, at 270-647-2619. Thursday, 28 August 2008, from 6:00 pm to Midnight: 1/5 Vietnam Veterans Annual Fund-Raising Dinner, Auction and Dance, to benefit Operation GREEN DRAGON.

Location: The World Famous Nashville Palace (located right across the street from the main entrance of the reunion hotel).

Since our inception, the 1/5 Vietnam Veterans Unit Chapter has conducted a fund-raiser dinner to support our programs and the FMDA. Last year, in Philadelphia , about 85 people attended, mostly members of our Chapter, family and friends. It seems that every year, however, we get more and more folks from the FMDA reunion who attend, mainly because we always have a lot of fun, and the food is great. Our success during last year's reunion (fund raiser dinner and clothing sales) enabled our Chapter to donate $4,000.00 to the FMDA Operating Fund.

This year we have expanded our plans to include a “not-so-silent” auction, another fun program and after-dinner dancing with music from a live band. We are hoping to have a large crowd. We are asking for $50.00 per person with registration in advance. We will also sell tickets at the reunion for $60.00 per person. We are projecting “net proceeds” of $3,000.00+ from this event, and again, all net proceeds will be donated to Operation GREEN DRAGON.

For more information about this event, please call Nick Warr at 828-697-6159, or visit our website at www.1-5vietnamveterans.org and click on “2008 Reunion .”

Saturday, 30 August 2008: 1/5 Vietnam Veterans Annual Memorial Service, Saturday morning, from 0730 – 0830 (Tentative).

Location: The VA National Cemetery, in Madison, Tennessee (right next door to Opryland).

If you are interested in attending our Memorial Service and/or you would like to help out with the memorial service “setup team” (flags, etc.) please call Gerry or Joanne Regan at 215-491-9079. Attendance at our Memorial Service is open to all.

See you all in Nashville!
