Unit Diary
(In 8 Parts)
During the battle for Hue City
Tet Offensive 1968
In 1991, the guided missile cruiser, USS Hue City, was commissioned in honor of those who fought in the Battle of Hue City during the Tet Offensive of 1968. This is the only ship in the U.S. Navy named after a battle during the Vietnam War. The heroic fight by 1/5 in the Citadel of Hue is legendary in Marine Corps history. All who served with 1/5 in Vietnam know that the Battle of Hue City was not the only time that the Marines in our battalion fought in a desperate battle and prevailed against overwhelming odds, Hue City is simply a historic marker representative of the character, courage and commitment of all 1/5 Marines.
Each year since 1991, the Captain and crew of the USS Hue City host the survivors of the battle during a memorial weekend. In preparation for the 40 th anniversary of the Battle of Hue City, I obtained and retyped the related pages of the unit diary of Charlie Company, 1/5. The goal is to present to the Captain of the USS Hue City a binder containing the unit diary, personnel rosters and the command chronology for all of 1/5 from Tet '68 along with a mahogany plaque containing the Hue City Honor Roll during the 2008 memorial ceremony.
Most of the pages of the unit diary can be printed on letter-sized paper but the length of the content on some pages required legal-sized paper. I did my best to replicate the original documents with precision.
